SIde Trip: Baker's Hill

If you're traveling via local transportation (a tricycle ), one way trip will cost you 70 - 75 pesos one way trip, about 15 minute drive from Poblacion, make your driver wait if you don't like to have difficulty leaving the area since there are no tricycles roving, 150 pesos for a round trip isn't expensive.

Baker's Hill is located in Mitra Road, Barangay Sta. Monica, Puerto Princesa. Ask your travel agent or the hotel staff to have your City Tour booking, usually a half day tour; or travel by tricycle if you wish to save a lot, tell the driver you're going to Baker's Hill.

The Cathedral and Plaza Cuartel

The white and blue colored cathedral, the Immaculate Concepcion Cathedral in Rizal Avenue. 

Plaza Cuartel, located opposite side of the Immaculate Concepcion Cathedral. A military fort in the past, a garrison of Spaniards, overtook by Americans and then by Japanese.

The dungeon, where American Prisoners of War was caged and burned to death by the Japanese. The eerie bunker but now closed to public view for safety reasons.

It was in 1997 when it was renovated and transform the place to a leisure park.

  A marker containing the name of eleven prisoners of war (POW) who managed to survive the horrible massacre on December 14, 1944.

Side Trip: Palawan Museum

The Palawan Museum  may be a point of interest when you're in Puerto Princesa, located very near the Mendoza Park. 

The museum exhibits material obtained in the relics of the past found in the province like this Manunggul Jar, one of the finest pre-colonial artwork masterpiece as what it boasts of. 

The Manunggul Jar is a burial jar excavated in Manunggul Cave in Quezon, Palawan.

The museum also showcases other elements used by the early people of Palawan in their daily living, like the coconut grater, baul or clothes chest and jars.

Ugong Rock

Ugong Rock is one great side trip after visiting the Underground River National Park. Ugong Rock is a 75-foot limestone formation in the midst of farmlands in Barangay Tagabinet, a once sleepy community.

 At the start of the course, the guide will tell you why it was called "Ugong".  The word “ugong” stands for the reverberating sound (similar to a bell) that stalactites produce inside the cavernous structures of Ugong Rock when hit or pounded with the knuckles or the palm.

The tour in Ugong Rock is actually a climb to the top of the limestone formation. Tourists need to wear a helmet to prevent head injuries while squeezing themselves through holes and cracks, bring along a bottle of cold soda or juice, and protected pockets to prevent the camera from hitting the hard limestone while actively climbing up a steep incline midway in the tour.

Puerto Princesa Underground River

Sabang is a small village in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Philippines.

 Used as an entry point to the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park. At Sabang Port, colorful flaglets adorned these tourist boats to the Underground River.

Resorts and Inns are now sprouting to serve the growing number of tourists.

Sabang is a visually beautiful place, a secluded beach in Puerto Princesa.

The most popular activity in Puerto Princesa is nonetheless the tour to the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park.

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park was inscribed to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s  (UNESCO) List of Natural World Heritage Sites. 

Beware of the alpha male monkey.They grab and can unzip your bags. There's also the roaming komodo dragon.

  

The underground river day trip is P1500 and includes all costs-  hotel pickup, park entrance fees and buffet lunch on the beach, that is if you booked your tour with your agency or the hotel you are in.
